Dogs of all shapes and sizes congregated at the All Dogs Sports Spectacular on Sunday – even Superdog flew in. Photo: Toby CrockfordThere were all kinds of canines at the largest one-day dog event in Queensland’s history on Sunday, including replica, therapeutic, musical, heroic and multicoloured dogs.
The sound of barking was deafening at times during the fourth annual Dogs Queensland All Dogs Sports Spectacular, with more than 1000 four-legged friends in attendance.
But there wasn’t just ordinary canines at the Dogs Queensland Showgrounds in Durack, this year’s event included a dress-up theme of ‘Dogs on Screen’.
Guests were encouraged to decorate themselves, their dogs, or their stalls to depict a movie that involved a dog.
There were appearances from Glinda the good witch from The Wizard of Oz, Charlie Brown’s pet beagle Snoopy as well as a Dalmatian onesie.
The event also had a serious side, with a focus on raising money for charity.
The beneficiary was Delta Therapy Dogs, which organises four-legged friends to visit patients of all ages in hospitals and care facilities across the country including Ronald McDonald Houses.
More than $2000 was raised in 2015, but Dog Queensland Committee Chair Sharon Munro said with more stallholders, new events and visibly larger crowds she thought this year’s event be the best yet.
“We are giving support to those children and their families that can’t be with their own dogs and pets and we know pet therapy is very important for recovery,” she said.
The events on offer at the sporting spectacular were duck herding, agility, obedience, rally-o, frisbee, weight pulling, sledding, tracking, lure coursing, flyball and a grooming competition.
